9/2/12 :: Graff Tours NYC Reviewed
I wanted to take this opportunity to say how much my students and I enjoyed taking a street art and graffiti walking tour with Graff Tours in NYC. Our tour guide Gabe was an energetic and informative leader on both occasions. Gabe’s passion for the medium, the artists, and the urban landscape as a canvas is evident. He is knowledgable in both the history of the medium as well as current events and artists. We took downtown soho tours on both occasions, seeing how the works changed over a one year time frame. “A whole new found awareness for the city” is a statement that most of the students found themselves asserting after the tour. The tour activates you to what is right under your nose, and it also shows where the not so obvious pieces are. I found Gabe and Graff Tours online through a friend. I became a supporter right away. In 2009 I created and currently teach a college level course titled “The History & Emergence of Street Art & Graffiti.” The course runs as a 3 credit special topics art history class at Long Island University’s Post campus, and CUNY’s York College. The tour serves as a fantastic resource for the students to get a first hand experience. I highly recommend the tour for anyone with an interest in street art and graffiti, as well as to educators who are teaching studio and modern art classes. By all means, book a tour for your students, they will love it.
