Neural-Seasonal Transitions
November 2022 – Im happy to share a series of new works that I have been tinkering and experimenting with over the last few weeks. This body of work is inspired by a few different things. My ambition is to pull it all together soon (my thinking) and help make sense of my process in its entirety.
A few key things in context that I have noticed over the last few years, especially the last 2.5 covid-years.. Im taking far more photos than ever before. This is likely a mixture of my continued interest in the medium of photography in general, and also the accessibility, comfortability and immediacy of my iPhone. Plus, the quality of the images and technology just keeps re-seducing me. I enjoy editing the images and manipulating them into new contexts. For example, taking fragments from daily commute to work, sightings, architecture, etc.. and recomposing it all into something new. A good word for this is “hybridization”. Digital art and illustration lend their hand to this as a process very well. I suppose Im an image-maker at heart.

The video is a looping transition using a decreased transparency process on the four static images above. The images hold up as individual illustrations, but brought together into a sequence brings the seasonal transitions to life. It may be moving a bit too fast as it loops but the more that I watch it, the more ideas I get about how I can work with this as an idea. What else can I morph content / context wise as an exercise and or a metaphor?
Each illustration in this series is a composite image hybrid that has at least 2-5 (or more) layers that allow for me to alter and manipulate them into a “scene”. These pieces work in sync as my personal demonstrations for the computer graphics class that I teach at NYIT NYC (more on all of that soon!) Class tutorials are always really fun to do, and sometimes they become so much more! I have been really excited about the new features being rolled out in adobe photoshop 2022 – 2023. The new Neural Filters are incredible. I am applying the “landscape mixer” to all of the images in this series. My ambition with this body of work is to explore the seasons, temperature, time(s) of day and to give a yearly feel to the project as a whole.
I hope that you like what you see, feel free to share your feedback!
