INAUGURAL EXHIBITION: "MONOLITHICA"
The Ryan Seslow Museum of Art & Design – January 1st, 2026
The Ryan Seslow Museum of Art & Design opens its virtual doors with “MONOLITHICA”, a defining exhibition that establishes the permanent digital footprint of the RSMAD Archive. This is not a simulation of a white-cube gallery; it is a dedicated architectural space built to launch the 40-year dialogue between the physical and the virtual.
Why Virtual Reality?
While the exhibition can be viewed on any screen, “MONOLITHICA” was architected specifically for the Meta Quest 3 VR headset.
In a traditional browser, you are merely looking at the show. In VR, you are standing inside it. The scale of the two 3D Monolith characters, the texture of the environment, and the spatial relationship between the artworks are designed to be experienced with true depth perception. This is not a simulation of a gallery; it is a new form of architectural existence for the digital artist.
The Centerpieces:
Anchoring the space are the “Monoliths.” These two 3D figures dominate the room, merging the stylized aesthetics of unity by material and form. They stand as silent sentinels monuments to the character design work that has been an emphasis in my practice for decades. In the VR space, they are no longer just images, they possess weight, scale, and presence.
The Walls: 2008–2025
Surrounding the two central figures is a retrospective collection of 20 pivotal works that trace a portion of the evolution of my visual language. The selection highlights the collision of distinct eras:
The Graphic Foundation: The early vector works (2008–2012) where the focus was strictly on bold iconography and reduction. These pieces strip visual storytelling down to its most essential geometric forms.
The Analog-Digital Collision: A direct nod to my roots and inspiration taken from 1980s NYC graffiti and culture. These works take tactile, analog collages vintage magazine cuts, subway textures, and iconography and force them through a digital lens. It is the friction between the handmade and the processed.
The Glitch as Medium: Viewing the “error” as a brushstroke. The collection features data-moshed stills and distorted composites that freeze the moment of technological breakdown, turning digital noise into a permanent aesthetic.
The Medium is the Architecture
While “MONOLITHICA” is accessible via any web browser, it was architected specifically for the Meta Quest 3.
To truly understand the intent of this archive, you need to stand inside it.
The scale of the figures and the layout of the retrospective are designed for immersion, not just observation.
