SPATIAL
ARCHIVES

Cultural archives transformed into browser-native environments.

Open the same address on a phone, computer, or VR headset. No app store. No separate edition of the work. The archive becomes a place.

Enter through a browser. Continue in a headset where WebXR is supported.

Sculptures of figures, buildings, faces, and abstract forms stand across a wide green field beneath a blue sky.

The archive is the architecture

Sculptures become a landscape.
Teaching becomes a building.
Browser art becomes a room.
Paintings become cities.

Ryan Seslow Art & Design brings the work, the archive, and the creative direction. AREMES brings archive intelligence, spatial systems, and browser-native delivery.

The three live environments

These are not renderings of proposed installations. They are working environments with their own live URLs.

The painting city is presented as a documented build. Its public entry point is the build article.

Immersive entrances open in a new tab and load 3D assets. Loading time varies by device and connection. The build articles are available without entering 3D.

Documented, destroyed, digital, and newly built sculptures become a monumental open landscape.

Drawings become objects. Photographs return lost sculptures to space. Scale is a deliberate artistic decision: the archive opens into a landscape, and every work has a far side.

The published build documents geometry simplification, Draco compression, instanced trees, and quality levels that respond to frame rate. Distance culling is coordinated with fog. Desktop rendering and Quest testing are treated as different performance conditions.

A public teaching archive becomes an inhabitable learning environment.

The teaching stays at the center. Fourteen long tables correspond to the MAKE index. Real instructions sit at reading height. Above them, Ryan's hand-selected works fill the walls. Every table is a door into another room.

The architecture expresses the subject. Gifs and Loops is circular. Collaborations is a five-pointed star. Paper and Light is a triangle, a prism. A Site of Your Own is a square. Assignments is a hexagon. The published account explicitly distinguishes Ryan's selected work from student work.

GRAFFANIMATION / HTML becomes architecture.

The file builds the room.

Early browser art keeps its motion, color, and unruly character. The original HTML determines the architecture. The work becomes walls, ceiling, and floor: preservation through reinterpretation.

Architecture & build notes

The first documented gallery arranged 70 works in seven rooms around a hub. That development used proximity loading and adaptive animation, with teleport movement and snap turning. The article then describes rebuilding the architecture from the HTML itself. The current entrance opens the file-built version, with a main room and individual piece selectors. The seven-room ring is part of its development history.

The Paintings Were Always Cities

Browser and Quest tested

An elevated view across a dense city of colorful curved and rectangular painted forms, repeating into a pale atmospheric horizon.
The Paintings Were Always Cities / Documented fifth iteration.

Twenty paintings become the architecture of a navigable world.

The shapes come from the canvases. The palette comes from the paint. Composition and repetition determine the city. The visual language of the work becomes spatial structure.

What the system can do

A shared address.
A visual language.
A place to return.

Silent-first interaction is a design principle. The archive communicates through images, readable text, movement, and space.

Open in a browser

Browser-native delivery, a shared address across devices, and WebXR access where supported. No app-store requirement.

Let the material lead

Archive interpretation, spatial curation, and architecture shaped by the work. Responsive imagery and animation, with adaptive performance.

Build for visual communication

Silent-first experiences, written interpretation, and caption-ready communication can be part of the commission from the start.

Keep the work portable

Browser standards and reusable spatial assets support work beyond a single device. Hardware and presentation requirements are established for each environment.

Extend when the archive calls for it

Archive search, intelligent interpretation, and private or authenticated access can be scoped as custom extensions. These are options for future commissions, not features of every environment shown here.

Who this is for

Culture with
somewhere to go.

Start with the archive.
Find the right scale.

Three possible engagements

Each commission begins with the cultural material, the people who will encounter it, and the place it needs to live.

The deeper continuity

The medium changes.
The practice continues.

Technology is material. The work, the archive, and the decisions come first.

Browser / HTML / GRAFFANIMATION

A page was already a place.

Early browser experiments and animated graffiti become spaces without losing the language they began with.

A Decade in the Browser

Physical work / Reconstruction

What disappears can return.

Photographs of destroyed sculpture carry form forward. Paintings and sculptures cross into spatial work, keeping the original decisions in view.

Studio / Spatial painting

The wall stops being the edge.

The VR studio experiments extend painting into architecture, continuing the environmental logic of the Merzbau through digital material.

RSMAD / RSOS / AREMES

The archive becomes a place.

RSMAD holds the artistic practice. RSOS provides underlying archive intelligence. AREMES carries the spatial and technical systems. NET-ART keeps the teaching public and connected to the work.
