A Series of Things that Make Sense to Me
Here we are in the flowing fall of 2022..
The autumn teaching semester is in 10 weeks deep, no turning back, we have come this far! Its technically week number 10.5, meaning, we have another 4-5 weeks to go including final presentations and portfolio submissions. The semesters always go by really fast. Teaching has been a challenge over the last 2.3 years. I know that I don’t need to remind everyone about the pandemic and the havoc that it has unleashed.. We are still dealing with it, especially the emotional and social aspects that show themselves in the classroom, in e-mail exchanges and the overall experience as a whole. It will take years to process, adjust, assess, re-assess and proceed even though we are proceeding regardless.. Forward we go. The art machine is ongoing, despite the unforeseen!
The body of new work included in this post have been derived from various class tutorials that teach various image making processes. This mainly places a focus on using adobe photoshop and illustrator as tools and a means of “creating composite” images, also known as digital art or illustration. The definition will depend on you, really. Surely I have spoken about byproduct art making here on this website many times. I cant help but think about how after years and years of teaching (20) and demonstrating techniques, demos and tutorials that a more developed bias isn’t occurring? Maybe these images are bigger messages? Im attempting to challenge myself on this and dig in a bit deeper. None of the works below had official titles until this moment, and perhaps addressing them as a series is best? Perhaps another Zine is in order to push further on it all? Or, perhaps we can simply enjoy the images and think about them all a bit more..

The individual fragments above led to the final image here. There are a few more iterations of this, as well as individual pieces. I wanted to “break or interrupt” their communication as a metaphor for this ongoing energy we find ourselves in.
More to come!
